Online Program Cut Drinking in Older Adults, But Cognition Didn't Budge

Based on: Effect of the online Rethink My Drink alcohol intervention on alcohol use and cognition in older adults in Australia: a randomised controlled trial.

Strong Evidence·Journal Article·Randomized Controlled Trial·The Lancet. Public health·Apr 2026

Australian adults aged 60 to 75 who drank heavily tried a four-module online program to cut back. Over a year, they drank about 5 fewer drinks per month than people who just got an information booklet. However, their thinking and memory scores didn't improve compared to the control group.

Key Insight

This study suggests online coaching can reduce drinking in older adults, though cognitive benefits may take longer to appear.
