In mice, the stem cells that make blood become a driver of the constant, low-level inflammation that comes with age. A mitochondrial protein called SIRT3 normally keeps these cells in check, but it fades over time. Boosting SIRT3 in these stem cells reduced inflammation and even improved memory and movement in older mice.
